Fun and Fitness at Home – The Alternative to Gym Membership

 

While being a member of a gym is an excellent way of getting yourself into shape, there are a number of reasons why this is not always the best option for everyone. Rising costs, the inconvenience of travel and the need for privacy can all play their part in putting people off a trip to the gym. Fortunately, there are a number of ways of maintaining and improving fitness levels, while at the same time ensuring your bank balance remains healthy. The majority of the activities presented below are relatively inexpensive to undertake and can be done in and around the home, at times convenient to you.

Walk Your Way to Fitness

It may be somewhat of a clich̩ to say that walking is the best exercise, but this statement is a clich̩ for a reason Рit is true. Walking at a leisurely pace is a low intensity exercise perfect for beginners and those who want to reduce periods of inactivity gradually. Scientific research has shown that taking regular long walks can be more beneficial than shorter periods of intense exercise. Best of all, walking is free, with perhaps the only added expenses being suitable footwear and a fitness tracker to monitor your progress.

Speaking of tracking devices, if you decide to forgo gym membership in favour of home exercise, it is probably wise to invest in an activity tracker. Self-motivation can often be the most difficult thing to maintain while undertaking your own fitness regime at home. Being able to actually see your levels of activity can be just the spur you need to forge ahead and reach your fitness goals.

 

Back to Basics

Classic exercises, such as push-up or sit-ups are perfect for home fitness programs as you can do them anywhere – in the bedroom, in the kitchen or even in front of the TV. Combine these staple fitness activities with other exercises and you can create your own domestic circuit training routine. Jumping jacks are a great way to warm up, with just five minutes necessary to get the heart rate pumping. In addition to the push-ups and sit-ups, you could add in other activities such as walking up and down the stairs and completing some basic dumbbell curls.

By making use of items from around your home, you can even forgo the cost of purchasing equipment such as dumbbells. Plastic bottles of the handled variety, filled with water or sand, are an excellent alternative to official weight-training equipment. A humble tin of baked beans can also make for a great weight-training accessory.

Above all, when undertaking a home fitness regime, it is important to maintain a sense of fun. By enjoying what you are doing, you are less likely to succumb to the many relaxing temptations that may call out to you, such as a comfy sofa. Intertwining fun with a constant monitoring of your overall progress can make for a winning combination in your efforts to get fit in the comforts of your own home.

    Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I am always at the gym! ;)

    I do my outside run & core work at home though – well, some core work at the gym & some at home. :)

    I’ve just cancelled by gym membership. As much as I enjoyed going to the gym, I found that the extra time taken with getting ready to go (brushing hair, preparing gym bag etc!) and travelling was eating into my workout time.

    I am fortunate that I have a treadmill and weights at home, so I have written myself a running and weights programme that I can do at home. I am also a member of My Yoga Online which has hundreds of streaming yoga videos, so on the days that I don’t run I will do yoga.

    And I have a Fitbit, so I am determined to get my 10000 steps in every day as well.

    There are so many ways to get and keep fit – gyms are great, but they are always optional and not the only or best way :-)
