Post Workout Recovery Fueled by Vega Sport

I believe in nourishing your body properly and when I train hard, I know to recover properly I need a good post workout meal.

During strength training we are causing trauma or injury of the cellular proteins in muscle. This prompts cells to begin a cascade of events leading to muscle repair and growth. In order to help our muscles repair, we must give them proper nutrition, especially post workout. The best time for your post workout meal is 15-30 minutes after exercise. For me, the most convenient way to feed my muscles within that short window of time is a protein shake.

Vega Sport and Fit Approach were kind enough to send me the Vega Sport Performance Protein Powder to try.

According to Vega, their recovery performance protein powder is a complete multi-source, alkaline-forming, plant-based protein powder blend, featuring 5,500mg of BCAAs and 5,000mg of glutamine per serving, and formulated to:

  • Improve strength and exercise performance
  • Repair and build muscles
  • Reduce recovery time between training

What I liked about this product (and Vega Sport in general) is that they use natural ingredients in their products. No fluff or fillers. No artificial junk. This protein powder is made with pea protein, SaviSeed, sprouted whole grain brown rice protein, and organic alfalfa protein. And it packs a whopping 26 grams of protein in one serving!  I also love that this supplement provides 5,000mg of BCAA’s (branched chain amino acids). Branched-chain amino acids stimulate the building of protein in muscle and possibly reduce muscle breakdown. They also help prevent fatigue and improve focus.

You noticed I called this product a “supplement”.  I use protein powders strictly as a training supplement for use after my workouts. If I’m training for a particular goal, such as muscle building, I may add extra powders to meals in the form of protein balls to get in extra protein and calories. A protein powder should not take the place of real food, and a whole food meal should be eaten about an hour or so after your post workout shake.

Now, what did I think of this protein powder?

      • Most vegan protein powders that I have tried in the past have a very gritty texture but this one wasn’t too bad. It really was very mild and when I blended it into my usual shake it wasn’t noticeable at all.
      • This is a very filling shake. It was thicker than what I was used to and really filled me up.
      • They sent me the vanilla flavored, and it tasted really mild. It’s ok by itself, but I really prefer it blended with blueberries.
      • I love the fact it is low in sugar (only 2 grams), and has 5300mg of L-Glutamine.
Overall, I found this to be a very good source of protein and the best tasting vegan powder supplement I’ve tried.
