All work and no play makes, well, everyone dull. And the same goes for your workouts.
When it comes to exercise change is good. The body can become used to doing the same routine and when that happens, you stop seeing results. So it’s good to keep the body guessing at what you’re going to throw at it.
Change is also good for the soul. If you continually do the same routine in the same place day in and day out, pretty soon you will run the risk of operating on auto pilot. You’ll show up, but the excitement will be gone and you will just be moving through the motions. You will also become bored, and then you will lose interest in the activity, and you see where I’m going with this?
I’ll admit I’m a gym rat. I love everything about it, the iron, the sweat, making faces when I push through that last rep. Yep, that’s all me. But I was in a rut and needed a change. So I decided to shake things up a bit by taking my workout outdoors, a “Routine Refresh in the Fresh Outdoors”.
I am always telling folks to make exercise fun. Find daily activities that you enjoy doing so you will actually do them! I challenged myself to use resources that my city offered such as parks and walking trails, as well as one of my local high schools.
Our city has a “Fitness Trail” that goes through a park. It has set up various exercise stations along a walking and biking trail. The stations have apparatuses where you can perform pull ups, push-ups, dips, jumps, etc. Even though the equipment was a little dated, it was still a lot of fun! As you can see below, a park bench worked just as well for push-ups!
The next morning I headed over to our local high school for bleacher and track runs. I’ve done bleacher runs before but I had forgotten how effective they can be! It turns out they had tennis courts too. I wasn’t too sure about tennis because my hand-eye coordination isn’t all that great, but it was so much fun! My boyfriend and I plan to play tennis more often.
It turns out that taking my workout outdoors was just what I needed to bust my rut. Not only did I work my muscles in new ways, using nothing but my body-weight, but it reminded me how much I enjoyed outdoor activities. It’s been a challenging and busy summer and taking it outdoors was just what my mind and spirit needed. I found it very soothing even if I was sweating all over the place!
Take my advice and do a “Routine Refresh”. Grab the kids and make it a family affair by taking advantage of your local parks. Take a volleyball or badminton set along. Be a kid again and climb the jungle gym. You can do step ups, tricep dips, push-ups and planks on a park bench. Lunge you way around the walking trail. Perform pull-ups or inverted rows on the jungle gym. Sprint between benches and then perform an exercise. The ideas are endless and no money or equipment is needed!
The clothes I’m wearing in the pictures are all adidas. They sent me the Techfit Bra in Pride Blue, the Ultimate Tee in Red Zest, the Ultimate Tights in Black, the Adipure Trainers in Red Zest, a couple pairs of socks and a gym bag. The gear is great and you can check out more action shots and the gear on my Instagram.
I loved the bright colors! They just sang “energy” and “summer” – just putting them on put a spring in my step. And speaking of step, the Adipure shoes were sooo comfortable and provided good cushion and support for my bleacher runs and tennis session. The Ultimate tee moved with the body and kept me comfortable during my sweat sessions. I’m going to admit that I wasn’t so sure that I was going to enjoy the tights, but I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. They fit well and weren’t the least bit restrictive – actually they were pretty darned comfortable!
I am so glad that I participated in the Routine Refresh Outdoors Edition. The time I spent outdoors was indeed refreshing to my spirit. I enjoyed just walking through the park at the end of the workout. It gave me time to think, reflect and reevaluate my goals. And now, one of my goals is to spend more time outdoors! My next adventure is to purchase a bike so I can go riding again – at the beach!
